SEL, SEAD, and the CASEL 5: Three Initiatives that Exponentially Improve Learning

Educational leaders are at a crossroads with finding ways to reach students during critical periods in their mental and physical growth. How can we ensure our students learn the vital life skills they’ll need to flourish in today’s society?

Two initiatives in education are leading the way to answer this question: SEL and SEAD. If you’re curious about what they are, how they work, and how we use both then, this page is meant for you.

What is SEL?

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process of learning that focuses on utilizing the natural motivations students and adults have for acquiring knowledge and applying new skills. The research shows that participants in SEL-based programs develop healthier identities, better manage their emotions, establish and maintain positive long-term relationships, and make better decisions.

What is SEAD?

Social, Emotional, and Academic Development (SEAD) is a student-centered approach to instill competency for critical thinking, empathy, and the creation of transformative conversations in the classroom. Participants of SEAD-based programs report having increased tolerance for others with opposing political views, decreased feelings of racism and exclusion, stronger growth mindsets, and increased feelings of civic responsibility and agency.

What is the CASEL 5?

Created by CASEL (the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), the CASEL 5 creates standards that emphasize the importance of equality in learning by addressing five key areas of competency

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-management
  • Social awareness
  • Relationship skills
  • Responsible decision-making

CASEL 5 is dynamic and can be tailored to meet students where they are in terms of social or emotional competency. Featuring lessons that are taught via age-appropriate tasks and challenges, the Framework has found success with students of all ages from pre-school to adulthood.

How Does the Speak Life Foundation Use These Frameworks?

Many programs only focus on one approach, leaving so much opportunity for improved critical thinking skills on the table. The Speak Life Foundation sees the CASEL 5, SEL-, and SEAD-based approaches as impactful and blends their methodologies into each module and Pathway. The end result leaves participants with a better self-awareness of their impact and their opportunity to promote empathy and induce change.
